Epidemiological isolation causing variable mortality in Island populations during the 1918–1920 influenza pandemic

BACKGROUND During the 1918 pandemic period, influenza-related mortality increased worldwide; however, mortality rates varied widely across locations and demographic subgroups. Islands are isolated epidemiological situations that may elucidate why influenza pandemic mortality rates were so variable in apparently similar populations. OBJECTIVES Our objectives were to determine and compare the p...

Excess Deaths and Immunoprotection during 1918–1920 Influenza Pandemic, Taiwan

To determine the difference in age-specific immunoprotection during waves of influenza epidemics, we analyzed excess monthly death data for the 1918-1920 influenza pandemic in Taiwan. For persons 10-19 years of age, percentage of excess deaths was lowest in 1918 and significantly higher in 1920, perhaps indicating lack of immunoprotection from the first wave.

Excess healthcare burden during 1918-1920 influenza pandemic in Taiwan: implications for post-pandemic preparedness

BACKGROUND It is speculated that the 2009 pandemic H1N1 influenza virus might fall into a seasonal pattern during the current post-pandemic period with more severe clinical presentation for high-risk groups identified during the 2009 pandemic. Hence the extent of likely excess healthcare needs during this period must be fully considered. We will make use of the historical healthcare record in T...

Mortality burden of the 1918–1920 influenza pandemic in Hong Kong

To the editor: The 1918 Spanish flu pandemic is estimated to have infected one-third of the world’s population and caused mortality ranging from 20 millions to 100 millions. The geographical origin of the 1918 influenza remains debatable. During an approximately 12-month period in 1918– 1919, the pandemic spread more or less simultaneously in Asia, Europe, and North America in three waves. In t...

Observations on mortality during the 1918 influenza pandemic.

The original purpose of our study was to examine the unusual W-shaped mortality curve associated with the 1918 influenza pandemic and possibly explain the peak in mortality among individuals aged 20-40 years. We plotted age-specific excess mortality instead of total mortality for the 1918 pandemic using a 5-year baseline. For comparison, we also graphed excess mortality curves for the 1957 and ...
